How to Pass the VID Practical Driving Test in Zimbabwe
What to expect in the VID practical driving test in Zimbabwe — the yard test, road test, common reasons people fail, and how to prepare and pass first time.
Once you have your provisional licence, the VID practical driving test is the final step to driving on your own. Many learners who can drive well still fail — usually on small, avoidable things. Here is what to expect and how to pass.
The two parts of the practical
The practical is usually split into:
- The yard (parking) test — reverse parking, three-point turn, hill start and incline control, all within marked boundaries.
- The road test — driving in real traffic while obeying signs, signals, lane discipline and right of way.
Examiners look for control, observation and safety, not speed.
Why people fail (and how to avoid it)
- Poor observation. Not checking mirrors and blind spots before moving, turning or changing lanes. Make your checks obvious.
- Rolling back on a hill start. Practise clutch-and-handbrake control until it is automatic.
- Touching the lines in the yard. Know your reference points for each manoeuvre.
- Ignoring road signs and markings. This is where solid theory pays off — you must read and obey every sign instantly.
- Nerves. Unfamiliarity makes nerves worse. The more you have practised the format, the calmer you stay.
Prepare the smart way
- Get plenty of supervised driving hours in the type of vehicle you will test in.
- Rehearse each yard manoeuvre until it is consistent.
- Keep your road signs and rules sharp — examiners fail learners who miss signs, even good drivers. Revise them in the Learn section and test yourself with timed VID papers.
