How to Sell Safely Online in Zimbabwe (and Avoid Scams)

Practical tips for selling online safely in Zimbabwe — pricing, writing listings that sell, spotting buyer scams, and getting paid without getting cheated.

Selling online is the fastest way to turn things you no longer need into cash — but Zimbabwe's online marketplaces also attract scammers who target sellers. With a few smart habits, you can sell quickly and safely. Here's how.

Write a listing that actually sells

  • Take clear, honest photos in good light, from several angles. Show any flaws — it builds trust and avoids disputes.
  • Price it right. Search what similar items are selling for and price competitively. Overpricing kills interest; underpricing loses you money.
  • Describe it fully — brand, condition, age, what's included, and why you're selling.
  • Be reachable but keep conversations on-platform where there's a record.

Spot the buyer scams

Sellers get scammed too. Watch for:

  • Overpayment scams — a "buyer" sends a fake proof of payment for more than the price and asks for the difference back. Never refund before money clears in your account.
  • Fake payment screenshots. A screenshot is not money. Confirm funds have actually arrived before you hand anything over.
  • "Courier will collect, just pay the fee" — a request for you to pay anything to receive payment is always a scam.
  • Pressure to move off-platform immediately, then go quiet on the details.

Getting paid safely

  • For in-person deals, meet in a busy public place during the day.
  • Confirm payment has cleared in your wallet or bank before releasing the item — not just a notification or screenshot.
  • For higher-value items, prefer buyers whose identity is verified.
  • Keep your messages and the agreement where you can refer back to them.

Protect your privacy

Don't share more personal information than a sale needs. Keep your conversation on the platform's chat rather than handing out your personal number to strangers — it keeps a record and protects you.
